First published in 2006, Basic 3D is Mike Keay’s popular, easy-build, aerobatic trainer and 3D aerobat specifically designed to take a budding pilot from basic through to advanced aerobatics. It can be built with a 52” or 58” span according to preference and, although designed for a .40 – .53 two-stroke engine, an electric conversion would be easy to accomplish too. Mike’s accompanying build article is available to View Here Designed to satisfy the needs of the up-and-coming 3D flyer, the appearance and construction of this model are completely different to Mike Keay’s previously published efforts, which in the main have been semi-scale, open-cockpit, golden era type sports aircraft. This one is to provide the builder with an aerobatic trainer that can also be an out-and-out 3D model, dependent on the wing type and size of engine fitted. With a .40 ‘cooking’ engine it’s a real pussycat, with a .46 it’s a lively workhorse, and with a .56 or above – wow! The model had to fulfil certain criteria. To be light in weight but strong, easy to construct, cheap to build and easy to repair. It’s offered in two versions: a 58” span rounded-tip smooth flyer and a 52” span clipped-wing alternative to satisfy the hooligan element amongst us. The Basic 3D has been well proven over the years and provided you build it according to the plan you’ll have a model to be proud of that will excite you with its flying ability. Not pretty, maybe, but effective! What’s in a Laser or CNC Cut Wood Pack? – A CNC or laser cut wood pack contains most, if not all, of the intricately shaped parts shown on the plan, which would be difficult or time-consuming to cut out by hand. It does not contain any sheet or strip wood, which you will need to buy separately. Alternatively, you can purchase an Additional Wood Pack, if available. Our Laser or CNC Cut Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply and lite ply and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model, such as hardwoods, metals and GRP sheets. Please note that all Laser and additional woodpacks are cut to order and as such we are unable to accept returns unless they are found to be faulty.
